AERC-INTERNATIONAL EASTERN ZONE SELECTION PROCESS AND PROCEDURE

The purpose of this document is to define the process and procedures for the SELECTION of the EZ PAC Squad. It is limited in scope. ALL issues not defined herein should be addressed in supportive documents. This is not an all inclusive single document with all the issues, situations and problems defined or resolved. The duties of the EZ Management Team (CDE, Veterinarian, Selectors etc ) are not fully defined. The AERC-INT Procedures and Policies provide for these definitions. The scope is LIMITED to: The development of the LONG LIST of qualified riders AND the SELECTION of rider/horses for the SQUAD ( Referred to as the SHORT LIST)

LONG LIST QUALIFICATION PROCESS

All rider/horse teams that meet the requirements established by the AERC-INT rules are able to nominate for the LONG LIST.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Refer to AERC-INT Procedures Article 7.
2. No other performance criterion is required to be listed on the LONG LIST.
3. There will not limit to the maximum number of LONG LISTED rider/horse combinations.
4. Riders may nominate on more then one horse.
5. The nomination process is opened and closed on the date designated by the ETZ Selection Chair as defined in AERC-INT Procedures 4.2.1

SHORT LIST SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE EZ PanAm (PAC) SQUAD

1.0. This SELECTION PROCESS is based ENTIRELY on MERIT. A head to head competition among the other NOMINATED RIDERS. It is NOT a race against the other riders nor is PLACING within the overall ride part of the scoring method. The LONG LISTED riders compete against each other only. Horses will be marked to indicate they are in the SELECTION RIDE.

2.0. The Team Chief de Equip (CDE) and the Team veterinarian along with the team shoer and/or assistant support personal as designated necessary by the CDE WILL attend ALL the SELECTION rides. In the event the primary personal cannot attend an event, the CDE will designate an assistant or substitute to attend the ride. The CDE and/or his support crew will confer with the riders. They will discuss issues and concerns as the riders ask for guidance. These rides will be the basis for the CDE to develop a relationship with the riders. The opinion of the EZ management team and Selectors will NOT impact the selection process.

3.0. There will be named SELECTION rides. The number and location of these rides will be designated by the EZ Selection Chair in consultation with the Zone representatives. All nominees MUST finish at least one (1) selection ride.

3.1.Riders may choose to do as many selection rides as they wish but only the highest points acquired from TWO rides will be counted.

4.0. The NUMBER of SQUAD members selected is based on the current AERC-INT policy, as defined by the AERC-INT Policies.

4.1. RIDER COMPETING MORE THEN ONE HORSE. A rider may demonstrate and earn points with two or more horses. The RIDER can be listed/selected with all horses, but will only take up one slot on the squad. That is, the RIDER will be shown on the squad list ONE time with multiple horses. The rider must declare the actual horse they will compete at the event as defined by FEI policy.

5.0. RANKING-PLACEMENT SCORE

5.1. A numerical score will be calculated for each Long List rider/horse combination that completes a selection ride.
5.1.1. The Placement Score will be defined as :  Placement Score = 20 x (Number of Riders Entered - Finishing Place).

        For example;
There are 21 Long List riders in the ride, the first-place horse gets 400 points, 20 x (21-1)
        The 11th Long Listed rider gets 200 points, 20 x (21-11).

" Riders Entered" is the number of Long Listed riders entered in the Selection ride.
"Finishing Place" meaning the placement calculated considering only the Long Listed riders that completed.  A placement tie is not permitted, an actual place will be called by the ride management finish line timer.

5.1.1.1. RANKING TIES. Tie scores within the allowed squad, will not be broken. In the event a tie exists for the last place position on the squad list, the tie is decided based on the placing in their respective last competition.

5.1.2 The AERC Best Condition score or time will not be applicable in the computation of the pointing system.

5.2. The CDE and the veterinarian and /or other personal, designated or appointed by the CDE, will perform a separate post ride evaluation of the horses. The process will be the same as the AERC BC veterinary judging. Horses will be scored with veterinarian score only. The riders and the CDE may discuss the results.

5.2.1. The purpose of this process is to permit the riders and the management team to develop a working relationship. The opinions developed during this process will aid the CDE and the Team Veterinarian in the selection of the TEAM.

5.3. Points will be compiled as earned for each ride by the Selection Committee (Selectors).  The Selection Committee will provide this information to each rider in an appropriate and timely manor. The complete results will be posted to the EZ web site.

5.3.1. Final squad plus the allowed number of alternates will be chosen by highest points.  The squad will not be numerically ranked. The Squad Alternate list will be ranked by their point score. Ties within the Alternate List will be decided as defined above. (Ranking Ties). A Rider may be listed with multiple horses on the squad list and on the Alternate List with more then one horse.

5.4. The TEAM is selected by the CDE with assistance from the Team Veterinarian at the event as per AERC-INT Procedures section 5.2.5.

6.0. FINAL REVIEW PROCESS.  If the Selected rider/horses continue to compete after the end of the selection process, the
rider will inform the CDE of these competitions. If possible and if funds are available, the CDE and the team veterinarian and/or a designated
representative (one MUST be a veterinarian) should review the condition of the squad selected horses at least ONE month before the event. If possible as many horses should be at one common evaluation site. An alternative process is for the CDE and the to veterinarian talk with the
rider by phone. In the event the condition of the horse is not acceptable to the CDE and the Team Veterinarian, or if a rider withdraws from the squad, the NEXT horse on the alternate list will move to the Squad.
